!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking. What are some themes that car manufacturers use to name their cars?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
VW, for one, has several themes.
1. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and other famous wind names: Passat, Bora, Golf (Gulf stream), Scirocco, Jetta (jet stream?), Santana (Santa Ana winds), Vento (wind), etc. Maserati did the same with Bora, Ghibli, Shamal, Khamsin , and Mistral . Zonda and Huayra take after an Andean wind and an Andean god of wind.
2. Golf then spawned other golf themed names like the Polo (supermini) and Caddy (van).
3. The Golf was sold in the US as the Rabbit , so that also spawned animal themed names like the Fox and Lupo (wolf).
4. There's also Phaeton, Apollo, and Eos, which are named after Greek gods. Sharan and Touareg have cultural connotations.
Then there's Tiguan . Tiger + Iguana...

Modern Car Companies - Lets make a jumble of letters and numbers to sound cool!

Yup. Specifically, bullfighting. The Veneno and the Silhouette are probably the only Lamborghinis that have no bullfighting related names aside from the first Lamborghini GT cars.

The 350/400GT didn't have bullfighting connections. Neither did the Countach, LM002, Huracan, and Sesto Elemento.

Oh yes. I forgot about the Countach and the LM002. I left out the concepts on purpose. There's also Portofino, Egoista, and Cala that don't have bullfighting names. Huracan, I hear , is a name of a fighting bull.
“The fighting bull Huracán of the Spanish Conte de la Patilla breed was known for his outstanding courage and strong sense of attack,” say Lamborghini officials. “He fought in Alicante in August 1879, showing his unrelenting character and remaining defiant and invincible, thus entering into the legend of fighting bulls’ history.

Nissan, while not particularly fun about it, used common naming conventions for a couple of their cars. The 240SX had a 2.4 Liter engine in it, the 300ZX had a 3.0 Liter, the 350Z, a 3.5, 370Z, a 3.7...And this pattern extended backwards into the pre-240SX days (read: 1989) (Yes, I know the Z31 300ZX came out in the early-mid 80s) into Datusn-land. Same principle.
...and then there's a ton of examples in which they just name cars whatever the hell.

Lotus: Quick, think of a cool short word that starts with an E!
(Not exclusively but modern years yes, and the majority of their production cars historically at least)
![]() 01/22/2014 at 19:28 |

They've also cars named after real people names. Gloria, Cedric, Silvia, Serena, Violet...

...Maxima, Sentra, Leaf...wait...huh?
JK. I see your point, but Nissan is just bizarrely random about this stuff.

For a while Ford was doing an "E" thing; Escort, Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Edge, but now they've switched to "F"s with the Focus, Fiesta, Five Hundred, Flex, Fusion & Freestyle.

BMW made lovely sense for a while.
Series, Displacement, Engine type, Misc
Such as: -525iT - 5 series, 2.5l, injected, Touring (wagon)
-318is - 3 series, 1.8l, injected, sport
There were always exceptions though, such as the 325/e, with a 2.7. This clashed with the 528e with the same motor, which originated the principle that the 325e was based on.....so why not the 328e? Who knows. And then there's the Z cars, and eventually it turned into the pointless clusterfuck of naming we have now. Yaay.
